About the tour
History and Luxury at the Sun King’s Palace
The tour starts with the main palace—œuvre of Louis XIV, the ‘Sun King’. For two centuries—from the 1680s to the French Revolution—, it has been the siege of the French royal power and the political centre of Europe. This collective masterpiece of thousands of architects, painters, sculptors, decorators, and gardeners served as a venue to demonstrate French supremacy in arts and economy. Its opulence meant to testify to the richness, power, and glory of the Kings of France. As we stroll through the lavish State Apartments and the Hall of Mirrors, built for Louis XIV at the peak of his power, we’ll discover the work of some of the most reknown French and Italian artists of that time.
Over time, the initial purpose of Versailles became a heavy burden for the successors of the Sun King. Louis XV and Louis XVI dreaded the pomp and enjoyed privacy. In that, they were following the general evolution of values and tastes of their time. In the 18th century, the key values of the Western society grew to revolve around happiness, intimacy, and simplicity.
The Gardens, the Subconscient of the Royalty
We will observe this transformation as we continue the tour with the park of Versailles. We’ll discover the strict geometry of the French gardens and the magnificent ingenious fountains designed for Louis XIV. From this complex organisation to the naturalness of Marie Antoinette’s ‘English-Japanese garden’, we’ll unfold in a subtle way the story of the French royalty.
The best mirror of the change is the contrast between the lavish decoration of Versailles and the exquisite candor of the Petit Trianon—the private kingdom of Marie-Antoinette. This estate included a barn, a ‘wild’ garden, and a lake created just for her. Until today, everything at the Petit Trianon reflects the personality and dreams of the last French Queen. This refuge provided her an escape from the strict etiquette of Versailles—a place where, she said, she could ‘finally be herself’.
This complete tour of Versailles ends with Trianon. From there, depending on your needs, we’ll either return to the main entrance of the palace or exit through the gardens into the city of Versailles.
