- A plunge into Picasso's art and life: his experimentation, inspiration, influences and rivalries
An exceptional figure in the art world, instigator of several modern art “revolutions”, Picasso is largely recognized as a genius–and he is as controversial as a genius gets. This private tour offers a comprehensive overview of Picasso’s rich and diverse œuvre, based on the unique collection of the Paris Picasso museum.
About the tour
The museum houses a unique collection of the artist’s works in a gorgeous setting of a historic hôtel particulier. It is the only collection in the world to present Pablo Picasso’s creative genius in a wide variety of forms and genres, from paintings (about 300 pieces) and sculptures to illustrated documents and photographs.
Hard worker, Picasso never spent a day idle and produced art with anything he could lay his hands on. He has been credited as a visionary and blamed as an egotist show-off. One thing is undeniable: his art doesn’t leave anyone indifferent.
This 1,5-hours private tour offers a comprehensive overview of Picasso’s rich œuvre, from his early Blue Period’s Self Portrait and Celestina to the last years’ The Kiss, Large Nudes, and Bull Fights, and covers the most important titles of his work: Still Life with Chair Caning, the Cubist Old Guitarist and Man with Mandolin, Women at a Fountain, The Pan Pipes, the Surrealist paintings of the 1924-1930s, the “war paintings” dedicated to the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), Memento Mori from the Occupation, works from the 1950s “pop art” period and the works Picasso produced in the last decade of his life. In parallel to paintings, Picasso recorded his entire life in countless pencil, charcoal, ink drawings, pastels and watercolours. “Painting is just another way of keeping a diary,” he claimed.
As a testimony to the artist’s extraordinarily diverse creativity, the tour also includes proto-Cubist wood and bronze sculptures, wire-framed models, the famous plaster Busts of Boisgeloup, theWoman in the Garden, the Bull’s Head, the Man with Sheep, and the montages Girl Skipping, The Nannygoat or The Baboon and Young.
We will also talk about Picasso’s private life and his successive life partners who had a major imoact on his work: Fernande Olivier, Eva Gouel, Olga Khokhlova, Dora Maar, Marie-Thérèse Walter, Françoise Gilot et Jacqueline Roque.
This tour can be coupled with the private walking tour of Montmartre, which offers an insight on Picasso’s life during his early years in Paris, or the private tour Sizzling Montparnasse: the Roaring Twenties in Paris.
