The grand Palace of Fontainebleau is one of the most impressive French royal châteaux, surrounded with a 130-hectares park and sumptuous gardens. It has been home to Kings and Emperors of France for 8 centuries without interruption, welcoming the Capetians, the Valois, the Bourbons, Napoleon Bonaparte, and the Orléans house. With more than 1500 lavishly decorated rooms, this showpiece of French royal and aristocratic history is a treat to lovers of art and history. Located 35 miles (55 km) southeast from Paris, Fontainebleau is a perfect day trip and a less touristy alternative to Versailles.
About the tour
Royal residence since the 12th century, the royal palace of Fontainebleau carries the mark of all the sovereigns who shaped France, from Saint Louis to Napoleon III. Carefully built by each of them successively, Fontainebleau recounts the history of France through its own.
“Here is the true dwelling of kings, the house of the centuries!” said Napoleon, nostalgic for ‘his’ Fontainebleau. This truly royal yet human-sized residence was indeed his favorite.
A great stage where the play of power was performed, the life of Fontainebleau is a long chronicle of festivals and feasts, balls and ballets, hunting, music, and theater. It’s just as much a political stage as well, where secret and public negotiations took place, shame and favor, disputes and settlements.
Starting at the entrance of the palace, this tour takes you first to Napoleon’s Museum, which recounts the history of Napoleon’s reign. It continues with the exploration of the royal rooms, starting with the famous Francis I gallery—a Renaissance masterpiece that served as a model for future generations of artists, anticipating the Apollo Gallery at the Louvre and the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles. We’ll also discover the Diana gallery, dedicated to the spiritus loci of the hunting, and private apartments arranged for Kings of France from Philip the Fair to Louis XVI. The Empress’ bedchamber keeps the touching memories of several “first ladies” throughout the centuries: Maria Medici, Anne of Austria, Maria Leszczynska, Marie-Antoinette. Another romantic touch—the memories of Louis XV’s wedding celebrated at the magnificent Baroque Trinity chapel.
After discovering the lavish interiors, we’ll enjoy a stroll through the famous gardens surrounding the palace—the romantic Jardin Anglais or the majestic French flower gardens. Designed by renowned landscape architect André Le Nôtre—who also worked on Versailles gardens—, they remain the largest example of their kind in Europe.
Through Fontainebleau’s important dates and symbols, we can measure the existence and experience of power. The traces of monarchs who lived there are still visible in its eclectic architecture. Mixing Mannerism, Baroque, and Classicism, buildings and decor intertwine to make this palace a unique and eloquent location.
