Hungry for something ‘alternative’ yet artsy? Paris is not just about the Louvre and the Orsay museums! Trendy neighborhoods like Belleville and Butte-aux-Cailles are the turf of many French and international street artists: Shepard ‘Obey’ Fairey, Kasink, Da Cruz, Marko 93, Invader. These vibrant areas are crammed with eclectic, extravagant, and beautiful street art, from massive murals taking up entire walls to tiny hidden pieces you’d miss if you didn’t know where to look.
To these artists, the entire street is a canvas; wide public exposure encourages them to freely express their ideas. This 2,5-hours-long tour will introduce you to strong, sometimes politically engaged art, even more poignant because it is short-lived. Artists and works constantly change; you never know what will have disappeared from the day before, what has popped up during the night. It makes each tour unique.
You’ll discover various techniques of graffiti, tags and murals, from spray can and vinyl to bike, wood, and mosaic. Most importantly, we’ll talk about the codes and core values of street art to fully grasp the spirit of this movement. While it has been looked down upon for years, today street art is recognized as full-fledged art, just like the Impressionism, the Cubism, or the Pop art. Most people still see it as a vulgar, if not dangerous, sub-culture. Our mission is to help you get past stereotypes and comprehend street art as an urban, social, and artistic phenomenon.
Every national “school” of street art is different. You’ll learn about the French one while discovering new hype Parisian neighborhoods on the verge of gentrification. We’ll walk in the footsteps of exuberant and eccentric figures who helped shaping “the 20th” and “the 13th” (districts) into some of the most interesting spots in the city. You’ll hear the stories and secrets behind a large array of incredibly imaginative works of all shapes and sizes.
This tour is an amazing opportunity to explore areas you wouldn’t normally go into and see Paris in all its vibrant social and ethnical diversity.
